Malaysia, Merdeka Cup champions after 14 years!

14 years people, 14 bloody winless years.

I won't bother with the match report, as you can click the scoreline above to read that. However there were some interesting pre-match quotes, that i think captured the current mood in Malaysia football:

“But there’s promise for the future because Malaysia have a lot of talented young players and I hope that the youth coaches are given more faith to do their job. ” – Dato’ Seri Dr. Ibrahim Saad, the general secretary of the FAM.

“I’m on a high especially when I saw the look on the Malaysian fans when we beat Singapore – they were very pleased with our performance. I hope that we can give our supporters more reason to come and cheer the team in the final. - Mohd Zaquan Adha Abdul Razak, Malaysian striker.

Congratulations, to everyone involved for this success. If there is anything to be learn from this though, is that we should focus on this current team and ensure their steady and progressive developement. Also, as the general secretary of FAM highlighted, we should trust our younger local coaches. But most importantly, we should not get carried away and shower them with property or other forms of monetary incentives, like what usually seems to happen in this country when someone wins something.

I think all the sports men and women in this country, should look to Nicol David, and follow in her footsteps. She got where she is, and continues to stay where she is (which is the No.1 female squash players in the world in case you didnt know!) by working hard and staying humble.

A template for success

In a recent interview on ESPN Sportcenter, i remember Nicol always mentioning that she is always learning, and always improving her weaknesses, even from players whom have already retired, with the sole intention of becoming a complete player. And to think, she is already the No.1 player in the world, and all she can think about is getting better.

Back to football l, i just hope everyone at FAM gets with the programme. I for one, would love to see more developement at the Youth level.
